RCB Title Celebration Stampede Prompts Talk of M Chinnaswamy Stadium Relocation

Massive crowd surrounds RCB team bus during IPL 2025 victory parade amid security concerns in Bengaluru

Last week, RCB became IPL champions for the first time in the franchise’s history. They defeated PBKS by six runs. But the team’s celebrations at M Chinnaswamy Stadium were overshadowed by tragedy. As a result of a stampede, 11 people died and another 11 were injured.

Compensation Increased

The Karnataka government swiftly responded to the tragedy. Five police officers responsible for event security were suspended. Changes were also made at higher levels. They led to the replacement of the state’s intelligence chief and the Chief Minister’s political secretary.

Initially, the officials announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh for each family of the deceased victims. Later, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah increased the reimbursement to ₹25 lakh per family. In doing so, he considered the public outcry and the seriousness of the tragedy.

Relocation Considerations

The incident has reignited discussions about the M Chinnaswamy Stadium’s central location. Narrow roads and dense urban infrastructure surround it. The current venue has long struggled to handle large crowds. Siddaramaiah has noted that the government is open to relocating the stadium to a safer area. “Public safety is our top priority,” he stated.

The Chinnaswamy Stadium has been RCB’s home since the IPL’s inception in 2008. Relocating such large venues is a complex project. Officials will need to conduct detailed planning and allocate land. All of this must be done in coordination with the BCCI and other interested parties.
