Shubman Gill’s Record-Breaking 17th Century at Edgbaston Test

Gill breaks records, Edgbaston, 17th century

India and England continue their Test series in the UK. In his second match as captain of the Men in Blue in Test format, Shubman Gill wowed the cricket world with his performance. He started the series with a hundred in the first match at Headingley, and at Edgbaston smashed 269 in the first innings, his maiden overseas double century. In the second innings, the cricketer scored another 161 off just 129 deliveries. The player also amassed 430 runs in the Test, second only to Graham Gooch’s historic score of 456.

Joining the ranks of the greats

Gill’s century at Edgbaston was his 17th international ton before the age of 25, surpassing the likes of Jacques Kallis, Babar Azam, Quinton de Kock, and Alastair Cook, who all had 16 centuries at the same age. Only five players had achieved more centuries before turning 25.

A new era of leadership

Gill’s aggregate of 585 runs is the second-highest in the first two Tests of a series, surpassed only by Graeme Smith’s 621 in the UK in 2003. His confident style of play, coupled with his leadership, has sparked comparisons to predecessors like Kohli and Tendulkar.

A strong season for a player in the IPL

Last season, Shubman played for the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL. The team finished third in the group stage with nine wins in 14 matches. In the Eliminator, they lost to the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise and failed to reach the final. Gill scored 650 runs with 6 fifties in 15 games (group stage + playoffs).
